So I just recently came across this song. I don’t listen to a lot of hip-hop these days, but when I do, it’s from the 90’s/2000’s. I prefer old school hip-hop where something was actually being said, and you could actually hear what that something was. So when I find something modern that catches my attention, it’s always cool. This song is reminiscent of 90’s vibes. Storytelling is on point, beat is cool, her flow is nice. The way it’s done also cracks me up. I love how she sounds clear and crisp, every word is understandable!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Yup that’s right I’m not a mumble rap, T-Pain effect, buried in way too much reverb fan. No garbage lyrics here either. It’s refreshing.
It’s very conversational, a back and forth is happening between her and someone in a therapist type role concerned about her well-being. The song details what she went through with a cheating ex and how life started moving fast after. Her music started taking off so she had no time to process it. She’s caught up in the lifestyle, admitting she enjoys the drugs, sex and money, even at the expense of her self worth. The relatability for some people is in the struggle to quit their dangerous vices and denying the destructiveness of them to themselves.
“What can I say? The shit works, it feels good
And my self worth’s at an all time low”
From a lie you tell yourself to awareness that it really isn’t working at all, in just a couple lines. Nice.
I like the way she delivers the anger at the end, her growls are kind of awesome. The breathing exercises are pretty great too. It’s a well done track.
