Ok so, this new Mariah song is hot. I wasn’t planning on this being my first post, but I’m excited about it LOL .It’s catchy AF with throwback vibes. It’s sampling Eric B. & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President.” I imagine some people won’t like it because she’s not singing the way they’ve come to expect, I, however, think it’s cool. She sounds really comfortable singing this, it doesn’t sound strained or like she’s struggling (as it has in recent years). It’s refreshing. She’s done more than enough to prove herself as a vocalist over the years so it’s about time she just has some damn fun. I think she should lean into this part of her voice now!
Check out these funny lines:
“Hit the little girls’ room to powder my nose
Then came in three hatin’ ass hoes
They don’t know the meaning of water nor soap
I don’t have time for the rigamarole”
Lmao. That ‘water nor soap’ line is hilarious. And hell yeah, she put “rigamarole” in a song. My Mom would be proud, she uses that word. Mariah will make it mainstream. Her use of interesting words fascinated me so much in my young life, she helped expand my vocab LOL but I’ll save that for another day. For those of you who don’t know, she was one of my major influences growing up.
Another fire line:
“Certified diamonds like the songs I wrote”
Hell Yeah girl!
I also like:
“Computer boy toy he was fun for a while
‘Til I caught him on the web hacking other girl’s files”
I love that “I like ’em dangerous” low adlib on the second chorus as well. The beat goes hard too. Def one to listen to loud. The kind of song that will make you hit repeat… it’s the dangerous type (had to do it).
The only gripe I have is no final chorus after the bridge. I know it’s a thing nowadays, but I’m not a fan of that trend. So that’s less about the song and more about my preferences. This is a great comeback. I want more of this Mariah. It feels like she’s much more confident, embracing where her voice is now and letting go of where it was. I love that!
